I was shocked to read a recent report from Consumer Reports that found some of the most popular protein powders actually contain lead. Out of 23 powders and shakes they tested, more than two-thirds had more than 0.5 micrograms of lead per serving. Some products, like Naked Nutrition Vegan Mass Gainer and Huel Black Edition, had really high levels. Honestly, it made me rethink the powders I use.
Lead is serious stuff. It can mess with your blood pressure, kidneys, brain, and even your reproductive health if you get too much over time. Even though the FDA says adults can safely have up to 8.8 micrograms per serving, Consumer Reports recommends keeping it under 0.5 micrograms. And if you’re pregnant or giving this to kids, it’s best to avoid it entirely.
Most of the lead comes from plants absorbing it from polluted soil, which is why plant-based protein powders often have more lead than dairy-based ones. That doesn’t mean adults should panic, but if you’re drinking protein shakes every day, it’s worth thinking twice.
The safe move? Try getting protein from real foods like Greek yogurt, chicken, eggs, nuts, or tempeh instead of relying only on powders. If you do use protein powder, check the labels carefully. Not every product is the same, and some could be putting your health at risk without you even knowing it.
